Game Company Donations.

4/18/2024

I want to start by stating that what I'm about to write about is my opinion, and purely my opinion. But I do feel like this is something that needs to be said.

I've seen game companies recently offering to make a donation to some charitable cause, but on the condition that the players of their games do some certain task in their games. Personally, I think this is despicable, and I'll explain why.

First, I commend the company for wanting to make said donation to a charitable cause. Yes, more companies should do this. But my issue with this practice is that they are making this donation on the condition that the gaming community perform some feat or action in their games

If you want to donate to a charitable cause, just go ahead and do it, don't make it condition. If you make it conditional, then in my eyes you are looking for a way out of making the donation. If you don't really want to make the donation, then don't do it. Just stop using the gaming community as your excuse.

Secondly, I've always believed that making donations to a charitable cause is something that should be done quietly, and with humility. Donations should not be public. I mean really, why would you publicly announce that you are making a donation, unless you want some sort of recoginition for making that donation. If you are donating just to get recognition, then I believe you are donating for the wrong reason.

I don't want to call out any specific companies for this behavior, but some of my favorite games are doing this. When I see that a game company is doing this, I stop playing that game for the duration of this "event". its not that I don't want the company to make the donation, but I don't want to be held responsible for them making that choice, and I don't want to continue to "enable" them to continue this behavior.
